Paleontology
The museum's Department of Paleontology is directed by the Curator of
Natural History. The Curator of Natural History is
assisted by adjunct curators, museum volunteers, and
members of the Southwest Paleontological Society,
who conduct field work, prepare fossil material in
the paleontology laboratory, catalogue fossil
specimens, and cast and mount materials for display.
Southwest Paleontological Society
The
Southwest Paleontological Society (SPS)
is a non-profit corporation devoted to promoting the
science of paleontology.
SPS was formed for the purpose of
assisting the Arizona Museum of Natural History with collecting,
documenting and preserving fossil material. Under the
auspices of the Arizona Museum of Natural History, SPS strives to
maintain the highest standards of conduct and
proficiency in all its activities. It provides
educational programs to its members as well as the
community.

Southwest Paleontological Symposium
The Southwest Paleontological Symposium is an
annual one-day event organized by the Arizona Museum
of Natural History, City of Mesa, and the Southwest
Paleontological Society. The symposium supports the
Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (SVP) Outreach
Committee's mission by encouraging communication
between professional paleontologists,
avocationalists and the public; and promotes
interest in the fossil history of the Southwest.
Participants receive a copy of the symposium
proceedings. Back issues of proceedings from 1993,
1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1999 are available for
purchase by contacting the Arizona Museum of Natural
History.
